A bass player’s primary mission is to bridge the rhythmic foundation of percussion instruments with the melodic super-structure of lead instruments and vocals. First and foremost, bass players MUST lock-in with the drummer to form the “pocket” and lay down that essential groove that the rest of band can respond to and play off of. Ask any player or vocalist worth their salt and they’ll tell you that the bass player makes or breaks the music.

Sparking the groove is challenging enough but the modern bassist is also called on to step up-front and treat the audience to a searing and melodic bass solo spiced with a bit of slap, pop and tap. Naturally, this calls for a much broader understanding of harmony and a solid bag of technical skills not previously required for bass players.

The learning path for bass players today goes way beyond simple bass lines crafted with roots, thirds and fifths. And just like other melodic instruments, it’s never too early or too late to learn as much as you can about theory, harmony and techniques that can be applied in both rhythmic and melodic situations.

Stu Hamm’s STU U is a complete course of study for ALL students of modern electric bass. Never before has a bassist of this caliber shared such vast knowledge, in such a comprehensible and accessible way. Whether you’re just starting out or already a working pro, there enough solid material and insight across these four volumes to take your playing wherever you want it to go.

Stu covers it all; rhythm patterns, theory, fretboard navigation, right and left hand agility, harmony, modes, chords, chromatics, arpeggios, stretching exercises, tone, stylistic approaches, muting, hammer-ons, ghost notes, slapping, tapping, improvisation and soloing. Best of all, no tedious theory or boring exercise to struggle through – you will play your way through the entire course working with Stu’s engaging, interactive video lessons and play-along workouts.

Dig in at the beginning and work your way through the entire STU U method or just cherry-something new and cool to bring to the gig tonight – it’s all here!

We rehearsed all day on Tuesday and it was my time meeting and playing with MI Grad Gianluca Palmieri – what a great player. We spent many an hour over plates of grilled meat and red wine talking about the staff at MI and his experiences there.

Wednesday was spent working on some of Greg’s ridiculously fast unison lines, with a well needed break walking around Puerto Madero. More meat and wine and conversation filled the evening.

Thursday we did 2 shows an the Teatro ND Ateneo… the first show was completely sold out so they added a second one … and the band was killin’. I was impressed by the professionalism of all the crew and staff — especially Lisandro, the monitor man…good monitors can make the difference between a good show and a bad one.

The second show was fun, we played a few different songs, and completely screwed up the form on one but made a brilliant recovery… it’s always the mistakes that are the best parts!! The crowds were great and our version of “Going to California” was a memory that will carry me through the next few weeks…

Later today I am meeting with my friend/guitarist/journalist Marcelo Roascio and his family and right now I am taking care of some MI biz (Bass Player Live schedules) and STILL WORKING ON THAT UNISON LINE… manana nos vamos a Rosario for the last show of our short Argentinian Tour.

Gracias Argentina!

It was my 1st visit to Israel and I must say that everyone was very friendly and helpful and it was a wonderful experience. The gig was sold out and the band played great…check out all of the videos posted by fans on YouTube…I met the Ran Levi, the bass player in the opening band who offered to take me to Jerusalem the day after the gig, and I said…OK….what another amazing experience! Toda Ran! I met a bunch of musicians who had studied at MI at an after show jam in a cool jazz club in Tel Aviv after the show.

On drums was Pete Riley, the drummer for Guthrie Govan (with whom I will be playing with in Amsterdam this November at a benefit concert for Jason Becker) and the tracking went smoothly and the grooves were KILLIN’!

Now my 40 hours in London are almost done, back to SF for a day them back down to LA to get back to work at MI…can’t wait!!

The first comes from the Eddie Lang Jazz Festival, in Monteroduni, Italy. If you check out the last blog post, you’ll find photos and a few words describing the festival that took place in a hilltop castle, hundreds of years old. Read the post with photos from Monteroduni here.
